First off, that title was so eye-catching. And then—this article! Truly interesting. Plus, ur writing style is so good—funny, yet captivating at the same time.
I love your writing style. It’s honestly on point and funny as well the first line made me laugh because of the rawness of it “how a poorly written…” well I can testify 💯 that your writing is anything but poorly written in fact you’re incredibly talented!
This reminds me of the film 500 Days of Summer! The director clearly wrote it about his relationship with his ex and wanted to publicly scorn her. Yet, when the actor Joseph Gordon Levitt calls out the main character, the director pushes back and defends his actions. Delicious irony that an actor understands the point of your movie than you ever did as a disgruntled ex/director
And yes, the release of the film has led to men labeling the female love interest as “Mary Sue” and harassment of women online who defended her and criticized the male main character
This is a fantastic essay. So well researched. It's crazy to think that what was essentially a post written by a jilted lover lead the way to so much violence and vitriol. There's definitely something here about the way that men feel entitled to women's bodies/time/affection and how that entitlement fuels so much political discourse. Thanks for introducing the concept of the Overton window - that's an incredibly useful for helping to frame contemporary politics.
If there's any solace here it's that this particular kind of slimy alt-right bro will never have the chance to engage in meaningful relationships - it's a politics that curses you to loneliness (but then of course many women seem content with marrying misogynistic men and entering relationships that effectively strip them of all financial independence, so who knows if this even still stands).
